Major in Black Studies Launch Event
Join us as we celebrate 麻豆区's new Major in Black Studies! Poet-laureate of Ontario Matthew-Ray Jones will speak along with Black Studies faculty members, including Prof. Erica Lawson.
Following the creation of a Black Studies Minor in 2022, the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies has developed a Black Studies Major, the only major in Black Studies in Ontario.
Open to all students in the university, the Major in Black Studies aims to develop students’ knowledge of the issues facing people from the Black Diaspora. The Major encompasses historical, theoretical, and socio-cultural topics, varying from Black Feminist Thought to contemporary Black cultural practices in Canada and elsewhere. Any undergraduate student may apply for admission, subject to prerequisites and general university entrance requirements.
In this interdisciplinary module, students can take courses in a variety of disciplines through a Black Studies lens, including Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Anthropology, English, Art History, Political Science, Sociology, History, French, Geography, Media and Communication Studies, and Philosophy.
